Alienation signals a moment to reclaim work as craft, connection, and expression, turning old structures into platforms for new creation.
Corporate work has been losing its sense of meaning for decades, and only in recent years has the emptiness become impossible to ignore.
The decline of the corporate role is not happening in one dramatic collapse but through a slow erosion of belief. The offices still gleam, the meetings still occur, and the emails still flow, yet the conviction that these rituals matter has faded. Many now see corporate structures less as vocations and more as funding mechanisms for actual work. This pragmatic subversion signals a shift: institutions remain, but their meaning has drained away, leaving space for parallel systems of value to emerge.
Marx helps us name this condition: alienation. It is the estrangement from our own labor, from the products we create, and from the communities that might have once been nourished by our work. Alienation is both a lived experience, something we feel in our bones, and a structural fact. We are dispossessed of what we make, disconnected from the process, reduced to cogs in a machinery that breeds apathy and thins the social fabric. It is no wonder that so many people tolerate work rather than love it, telling themselves stories that make Monday survivable but rarely fulfilling.
Yet disruption always carries a paradox. AI shakes the traditional career ladder, but history reminds us that such turbulence often creates new openings. In past eras of technological upheaval, young and ambitious people built companies, movements, and institutions that defined the future. The same may be true now: as incumbents falter, parallel economies take root in side projects, creative ventures, and independent networks of production and meaning. Alienation can expose emptiness, but it can also clear space for the unexpected.
The opportunity lies in how we respond. We can either remain trapped in performance, forwarding emails and filling noise with slop content, or we can start to treat old systems as platforms for new creation. Alienation then becomes not just a diagnosis but a signal, proof that we are overdue to reclaim work as craft, connection, and expression. The death of the corporate role is not an end but an opening.
What comes next depends on whether we keep pretending, or dare to build the new.

What's emerging isn't the collapse of corporate work—it's something more interesting. People are building parallel systems of actual value while maintaining their corporate personas. I know developers who do their "official" job in the morning and build their own products in the afternoon. Marketers who run their agencies from their corporate desks. Consultants who've automated their actual deliverables and spend most of their time on side projects. The corporate role hasn't died; it's become a funding mechanism for actual work.

Alienation, with all its meanings, is one of those words that you could use to describe the current zeitgeist: the experience of separation from yourself, from your work, from the products of your work, from your community. All these things, both philosophical and material, get wrapped up into this concept of alienation. Because it’s both an experience—something that people feel internally, describing the way they see their lives—and also a fact of how people work in society. You’re dispossessed of the products of your labor and disconnected from the process of labor and its outcomes. And this is, of course, all thanks to the development of capitalism and industrialisation, and the rise of a so-called mass society with all the apathy, loss of agency, and weakened social fabric that it generates.
